Graham Freudenberg was born in Brisbane, Australia, on 12 May 1934. educated at Brisbane Church of England Grammar School, he worked for nine years as a journalist before joining Arthur Calwell's staff as press secretary. In 1967, he was appointed press secretary to Gough Whitlam and between 1972-5 was special adviser to the Prime Minister.
