Swan was born in Ireland and came to Australia during the gold rushes of the 1850s. He became editor of the 'Ararat Advertiser'. This novel first appeared in the 'Sydney Mail' in 1879 and is set in Victoria and North Queensland. The work is introduced by a lengthy introduction on the author's life and writings.
