John Watkins was born in Springsure, Queensland in 1955, to parents Nell and Allan Watkins. together with three older sisters and two younger brothrs, he attended Springsure State School. Apart from a stint working in the Northern Territory and chasing rodeoas as far afield as Southern Australia, New Zealand and North America, he has spent most of his working life on cattle properties in the Central Highlands-and rarely far from the Canarvon Ranges.
