New England/Armidale | History & Studies - General | Non Fiction

This history of the Armidale Fire Brigade covers the period from the brigade's beginning in 1891 to the late 1940's when the last fireman present at the 1932 Braund's fire retired. The heroic actions of the Armidale firemen at the Braund's fire led to the instigation of the NSW Fire Brigades Medal for Conspicuous Bravery, referred to by NSW Board of Fire Commissioners' president, T.J. Smith, as the 'Firemen's Vitoria Cross'; and eight Armidale firemen were the first to receive the award.
